Sarah Mohammad was born and raised in Cleveland to Palestinian parents.

A senior studying biology and Arabic at Cleveland State University, Mohammad is president of the campus’ Muslim Students Association. As a first time voter, Mohammad is organizing events on campus to mobilize her peers, especially other Muslims and people of color, to become political active, and to register to vote. She observes, “A lot of them come from Middle Eastern countries that are dealing with a lot of issues politically, so they come to this nation, they feel that why should I waste my time and try and incorporate my voice when a change is not gonna come? And that’s the problem we’re trying to combat. We’re trying to educate and we’re trying to push for people to really become more active politically.”

America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa (ABTN) will examine engaged voters like Sarah whose power and influence are growing in a 2016 election special titled “The New Deciders.” The one-hour program will air on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 on PBS and local public TV stations (check local listings).
